Neuromuscular Dentistry is the art and science of using the relaxed position of the muscles, head and neck to return your jaw to an optimal physiologic position.
Traditionally, there have been only a few Raleigh TMJ dentists who have concerned themselves with more than hard tissue — your teeth and joints — and included the relationship of these structures to your muscles. Neuromuscular dentistry addresses not only hard tissue, but the dynamic relationships between your soft tissue, muscles and nerves that affect your range of motion and body posture.
This challenge necessitates the capability to objectively and scientifically measure muscle function and its correlation to proper jaw posture and jaw movement. Until recently, these measurements were not addressed by traditional Raleigh dentistry. Treatment was anecdotal, and guesswork led to only minor, coincidental successes.
Through the use of sophisticated computer analysis and low-frequency Transcutaneous Electro-neural Stimulation (TENS), Raleigh, NC, TMJ dentist, James R. Harold can return your jaw and joints to a balanced position, correcting any misaligned bite and gradually eliminating TMD symptoms.
The TENS unit is designed to relax your muscles, allowing us to measure their electrical activity to determine the ideal position of your jaw in relation to your skull. Through the use of Electromyography (EMG), we can accurately measure the presence of muscle stress to find an optimum bite. We also use sonography to detect any popping or clicking that indicates muscular disharmony or degenerative joints.
Dr. Harold, as a premier Raleigh dentist, uses all of this information to develop a personalized treatment plan for you that provides short-term relief and long-term elimination of your symptoms. We encourage you to conduct more research on your own and also speak with one of our Raleigh dental team members about how neuromuscular dentistry can prevent TMD (or TMJ) from causing any more dysfunction in your life.We can also improve your smile with teeth whitening.
