Teeth that are cracked or severely broken down by decay are often crowned. A preparation is made on the tooth to remove all previous filling material and decay, and an impression is made of the preparation. A laboratory custom makes the crown to precise color and fit. Most dental offices make crowns out of metal and porcelain that are cemented in place. We choose to provide a much higher level of service by fabricating crowns out of non-metal materials that are permanently bonded in place. Non-metal crowns are infinetly more life-like, and eliminate the dead, opaque appearance that metal-based crowns provide. A superior restoration with a beautiful appearance.
A Bridge is a custom device anchored to neighboring teeth that replaces one or more missing teeth. When a lost tooth is replaced with bridgework, the teeth on either side of the missing one are prepared as crowns to serve as abutments to hold the prosthetic (replacement) tooth in place. Crowns and bridges are most commonly prepared from high quality materials such as semiprecious or precious metals, porcelain, or a fused combination of the two. Aesthetics, function, and tissue compatibility are considered when selecting the material most suitable for you.
Amalgam, silver fillings, have long been and remain the standard filling material according to a survey done by the American Dental Association (ADA) in 2000. The major component of amalgam is mercury, not silver. Over 78% of the dentists surveyed considered it the material of choice, citing that it was cheap, easy to place, and had longevity. Aside from that fact that mercury is highly toxic, and that amalgam reacts to temperature changes by expanding and contracting, causing fussures and cracks, The aesthetics leave much to be desired. Advanes in dentistry technology now present new conservative treatments like tooth colored filling or porcelain bonded restorations. These newer fillings are not only more aesthetically pleasing, but are healthier for you and your teeth. Many patients choose non-meatl fillings for al new dental issues, however, some are using a more proactive rather than reactive approach by replacing their metal fillings with the non-metal. This has proven to be a choice many patients are happy to have.
Implants are highly successful as a permanent solution to missing teeth. Implants completely simulate a natural tooth not only where it's visible, but also where it attaches in the jaw tissue preserving the bone structure. Dental implants require a surgical procedure wherein a titanium cylinder is secured in the bone and serves as the root of your tooth. When that heals and the tissue adheres to the cylinder, a crown is attached to the it giving the appearance of a natural tooth.Implants can restore a single missing tooth or serve as an anchor for bridges replacing several missing teeth.
