Lasting Relief from Chronic Pain

Do you experience any of the following symptoms?

  • Chronic headaches
  • Face or jaw pain
  • Worn, chipped, cracked or loose teeth
  • Cracked or chipped restorations
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Ear congestion or ringing
  • Clicking or popping in the joints
  • Clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Limited opening of the mouth
  • Tingling in the fingers

These symptoms indicate the presence of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) - a lack of harmony between the joints, muscles and nerves that make up the structure of your mouth. The good news is that these issues are treatable!

Thirty years of research and clinical experience have enabled Neuromuscular Dentists to treat this problem by restoring the proper harmony between these structures. The results are protection of your natural dentition from destructive forces, increased longevity of your restorations and above all, relief from pain.

Are you tired of your chronic headache? Dr. James R. Harold and the North Carolina Center for Aesthetic Dentistry invite you to explore the possibility of TMD treatment via a complimentary consultation at our practice. Several visits could very well end your discomfort for good!

What is Neuromuscular Dentistry?

Neuromuscular Dentistry is the art and science of using the relaxed position of the muscles, head and neck to return your jaw to an optimal physiologic position.

Traditionally, Raleigh dentists have concerned themselves with only hard tissue - your teeth and joints - largely ignoring the relationship of these structures to your muscles. Neuromuscular dentistry addresses not only hard tissue, but the dynamic relationships between your soft tissue, muscles and nerves that affect your range of motion and body posture.

This challenge necessitates the capability to objectively and scientifically measure muscle function and its correlation to proper jaw posture and jaw movement. Until recently, these measurements were not addressed by traditional Raleigh dentistry. Treatment was anecdotal, and guesswork led to only minor, coincidental successes.

How are these Raleigh TMJ Problems Treated?

Through the use of sophisticated computer analysis and low-frequency Transcutaneous Electro-neural Stimulation (TENS), Raleigh dentist James R. Harold can return your jaw and joints to a balanced position, correcting any misaligned bite and gradually eliminating TMD symptoms.

The TENS unit is designed to relax your muscles, allowing us to measure their electrical activity to determine the ideal position of your jaw in relation to your skull. Through the use of Electromyography (EMG), we can accurately measure the presence of muscle stress to find an optimum bite. We also use sonography to detect any popping or clicking that indicates muscular disharmony or degenerative joints.

Dr. Harold, as a premier Raleigh dentist, uses all of this information to develop a personalized treatment plan for you that provides short-term relief and long-term elimination of your symptoms. We encourage you to conduct more research on your own and also speak with one of our Raleigh dental team members about how Neuromuscular Dentistry can prevent TMD from causing any more dysfunction in your life.
